Built By Musicians For Musicians

Earthquaker Devices rose from the depths of a basement in Akron, Ohio to the top of the boutique pedal world, and their rapid ascent has something to do with their inspiring original circuits, fresh takes on classic pedals, peerless quality control, and dedication to building each and every pedal by hand. However, founder Jamie Stillman has a different hypothesis explaining his company’s success: everyone who works there is an artist, and they approach building pedals by hand with the same sort of passion and drive as a musician writing a song or a painter filling a canvas.

Mr. Stillman isn’t kidding about only employing artists, either. If you look at the employee bios Earthquaker’s website, almost every single one mentions that they’re in at least one band, and about half of them are in two or more. Jamie Stillman played in half a dozen groups himself, and his first business endeavor was actually a record label, Donut Friends, that put out fifty records and achieved cult status in the realms of punk, metal, and shoegaze. Make no mistake: Earthquaker Devices are pedals built for musicians by musicians.

Earthquaker Devices has grown to employ over fifty skilled artists/craftspeople, but their story starts with one man tinkering with a DOD 250 overdrive late at night in a basement. When founder Jamie Stillman’s beloved overdrive pedal stopped working, he couldn’t find anything else that sounded as good, so he decided to try and fix it himself. After some googling, he found the problem, fixed it, and was completely hooked on pedals.
